| Superintendent's Message |
Spring has sprung in west-central Ohio, and opportunities are also springing up for our students at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center! This issue of Hi-Lites focuses on several key initiatives within our district as we look to expand career-training options in a time of much-needed job growth in Ohio.
We are very excited to announce the opening of our North Campus in Kenton, located at the former Eastcrest Elementary School. Read more about this exciting step for Ohio Hi-Point in this edition of the newsletter!
We also continue to expand college credit agreements with colleges and universities, which allow both our high-school and adult education students to earn credits while completing our career training programs. Now more than ever, the cost-savings of this “jump start” on higher education is critical to moving students of all ages with limited resources on to the next step in their career pathways.
And, if that weren’t enough to celebrate, we’re very proud that one of our own—Frank Drain, Aviation Occupations teacher at our South Campus (Grimes Field in Urbana)—has been named the 2010 New Career and Technical Teacher of the Year. Read more about Frank's accomplishment in the newsletter!
Have a wonderful spring, and enjoy this issue of Hi-Lites! |

| Frank Drain wins Ohio ACTE Outstanding New Teacher Honors |
Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Aviation Occupations Satellite Instructor Frank Drain has been named the Outstanding New Career and Technical Education Teacher by the Ohio Association of Career and Technical Education. Drain, who is in his fourth year teaching the program, will officially receive the award during the Ohio ACTE Annual Conference held in Columbus in July. The Outstanding New Career and Technical Teacher Award is given to an educator to recognize their significant contributions to programs and career-tech education, as well as being fairly new to the field.
“I was surprised, especially since I feel my peers are certainly more deserving than I am,” said Drain. “Special thanks go to my teaching mentor Judy Fletcher [Marysville Satellite Teaching Professions Academy Instructor]. Also, Ohio Hi-Point's administration has shown a great deal of vision by offering this unique program to high school students.” Read More>>> |
| State Senator Karen Gillmor Visits campus |
State Senator Karen Gillmor, representing the 26th District of Ohio, visited the campus of Ohio Hi-Point Career Center in Bellefontaine on April 12. Gillmor toured the district led by Daniel McCully (Health Technology, Riverside) and Ashley Bisel (Business Administration Technology, Triad), both student ambassadors in the high school.
Senator Gillmor visited several labs, including Animal Management, Information Technology, Business Administration Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Architectural and Mechanical Design and Automotive Collision Technology, where she saw the new state-of-the-art paint booth students have the opportunity to learn within thanks to partial funding by the Dr. Earl Sloan Foundation. Students in Electronics Engineering Technology showcased a robotics project they were working on and demonstrated to her how it worked. Senator Gillmor also learned more about the high school's college credit agreements in place with various colleges and universities, which allows students at Hi-Point to earn credit while in high school. | Ohio Hi-Point/Graham Satellite launches College in the Classroom opportunities |
The Ohio Hi-Point Career Center/Graham High School Business Satellite programs are now offering students the opportunity to earn college credits while enrolled in high school. The program called “College in the Classroom” is a partnership with Clark State Community College and allows students to obtain college credit at a reduced rate per credit hour. Unlike post-secondary options, students do not have to qualify. They will receive the grade at the college that they earn at the high school.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience college-level classes in a high school environment. I'm so proud of all the students who take the steps necessary to advance their education,” said Donna Atkinson, who oversees the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Business Satellite programming hosted at Graham High School. “With the workforce being so competitive and job scarce, this is something that might give our students the edge over their competition and hopefully get them started on a path to life-long learning and a rewarding career.” Read More>>> |
